how to remove a roof rafter that is rotten?
Q. the roof is in fare condition except for water and termite damage in the area where the rafter is exposed to the weather.
Asked by RICHARD W - Thu Jun 15 23:58:31 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. 1. Make sure the damage is confined to a specific area. 2. Go to a local tool rental (many speacialise in construction tools and accessories) and ask for support jacks. They come in many styles, are used to support such things as rafters during remodeling and so on and the staff can instruct you in the particulars of using what they rent. 3. You will probably have to remove and replace some roof sheathing at the time you replace the rafter so make sure its done by a knowlegdable person or the damage will be worse after the fix than before. 4. If these simple instructions don't solve your problem then you likely don't have the expertise to it properly or safely. Find a pro. A bad roof or roof repair will eventually ruin your home.

Where can find a metal saddle to connect a patio roof rafter to sit on top of an 8:12 pitch roof?
Q. this is not a normal joist hanger such as sold at Home Depot and made my Simpson. It is a heavy metal bracket with a foot at the 8:12 slope of the roof and a horizontal angle bracket to hold a girder that supports the patio or pergola roof rafter.

Should rafter vents be covered with insulation in one's attic?
Q. The snow from friday left lots of snow on my roof. Now that snow is melting and forming ice. Today i noticed that water was dripping from my window molding right above my cathedral celling. Went in the attic to investigate and found that one side of the roof had the rafter vents covered with insulation and the other side did not.(About 1 foot above insulation). Could this be the cause of the melted ice entering the house?

A. first a question for you; Do you have a Swanson Speed Square? If not go get one, they are invaluable in the application. I will be happy tell you the cutting measurements, But first I need to know the following, width of building, pitch desired, eave style and overhang desired. Let me know and I'll reply with the length, plumb cut seat cut angles (I am correct in assuming this is in fact a hip roof and not a gable roof???)

Floor-to-rafter in my 1925 basement is 6'6". How to finish it and still meet building code (loopholes ok)?
Q. Clearly digging the whole thing a foot deeper is not going to work. Are there clever ways to use the space between rafters to officially meet code? Could I dig out a section in the middle? Are there grandfather clauses for old houses like mine? Could I just finish it and not call it "livable space"?

A. There is a good chance that your on to something with the "Grandfather clause". 6' 6" ceiling is low, but high enough for most people to walk around in. Yes you could dig out more space, but the expense would be great

how do you repair a manufactured roofs rafter ends ( 18 inches from fascia)?
Q. wood rot has deteriated the ends (6 to 18 inches) of several rafter ends where it meets the fascia. There is no visible signs of leaking water into the interior of the house. The home is twenty years old. I am a full-time college student so I can not afford a costly repair. Could you suggest how to repair the damage or what I can do to temporarily (2-3 years) fix the roof until I finish college. I live near Seattle, WA.

A. Are you using the 2 x 10 for shade? What do you mean no live load as in no deck and people will be on it? If for a trellis (shade only) you are only limited by the length of the lumber. Anything over 16 feet will start to get pricey, and anything over 20feet will be a custom order. If you are building a trellis you might consider using 2 x 6s running one direction with 2 x 4s on top running perpendicular to the 2 x 6's. I would suggest that you space them 12" on center. I have built a couple like this and they turned out nicely. If you are building a deck and intend to walk on it then that depends on the spacing of the joists as well as if you are placing a beam under them and cantilevering a part of the joist. All out door… [cont.]

Q. or can i just side nail it (sister), to joist end? like pre made trusses.
Asked by zeppy - Sun May 25 17:06:29 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on the size of your rafters. If you are using 2" x8" rafters or larger, then you have enough meat on the rafter to afford cutting a notch (birdsmouth) in the rafter. Anything under that I would suggest you nail the rafter securely into the ceiling joist, then toenail the ceiling joist into the top plate. Some people make mistake of cutting too deep a (birdsmouth) notch in rafter and thus weakening the rafter at this point. If you want a more secure method, and you don't want to notch rafters. Cut wedge blocks to fit under the rafters. Nail them to the underside of the rafter which will then lay flat on top plate. Remember to cut your ceiling joist off on angle of rafter at the top. You can do this with a sawzall after the… [cont.]

A. Most importantly you have to know the pitch of the roof before hand, then with that info and the measurement from the peak to an overhang you can determine the proper angles, then make a sample cut on a piece of stock and test your measuring and mathmatical skills. Rev. Steven

A. A truss is built with a flat spot where it bears on the exterior wall for positive nailing and load dispersment. A stick built roof has to have a bird's mouth cut into it to achieve the same positive bearing and nailing.

Asked by Tinindian - Thu Jun 18 03:09:34 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You shouldn t cut trusses because they have been computer designed by the manufacture for your houses configuration to span the building (Roof Truss computation) and changing the truss throws extra load on other trusses which could make you roof sag. The bottom cord of a truss is made to bow slightly upward so when the load of the roof is loaded it straightens out, cutting a cord throws that out of wack. I would get a truss manufacture to spec it for me because you might need extra webs, Saying that if want to do this anyway, you ll need to as you said sister rafters and double joist/cord and really trim the opening out well.

A. All the tables that you need are engraved on a framing square. You can find a discussion of their use in the two links below, or consult the classic work "The Steel Square" by H.H. Siegele. The third link shows a good explanation of the calculations involved using a trigonometric approach. The fourth link has extensive formulas, description, and diagrams. For a detailed explanation of rafter calculation using the calculator only, see "Site Carpentry" by C. K. Austin.
