How do I connect floor joists to a wall that has no header joist?
Q. I am putting in a raised floor in my old garage, for a remodel. One side has a header joist, but the other side has a sill, but no header joist. How would you recommend that I attach the Joists to the wall with no header joist? Thanks The wall is already existing, do I need to tear it out to install the new header joist?

A. Install a Ledger board of a 2X8 with nails and 4 in. lag bolts into every other wall stud. on this ledger board get some 2x8 joist haingers and put them at 16 in on center to hold the new 2x8 floor joists. if your between 2 walls each wall will need this ledger board installed .The ledger board and joist weight is there by transfered on to the walls.

Is it worth applying Green Glue on top of floor joists before laying the subfloor?
Q. How substantial will the reduction in noise as heard from below and on the floor be when using Green Glue (www.greengluecompany.com ) on top of your floor joists? If it is a good idea to put this on the joists should it be spead into a film over the entire joist or just lay down a wavy bead? Is this even worth doing or are there better solutions for reducing impact and foot-fall noise?

A. This is to eliminate the chances of squeeks developing. I would use the bead method of application as the boards will press it out.

Do 1st story floor joists and 2nd sorty floor joints always run in the same directions?
Q. We are considering knocking down a wall and are concerned that it is load bearing. The basement floor joists in the basement indicate it would not be loadbearing but we cant see the joists directly below the wall. Do floor joists always run in the same direction of first and second levels? THanks!

A. Any interior wall that runs parallel to the side walls of a house are normally load bearing.Walls running perpendicular usually are not.Unless you require a single ceiling level, a header is recommended, but necessary on load bearing walls, ceiling joists normally run the same way the roof pitches. t

A. You should be able to get that kind of info at the building dept. at the city or town hall where ever you are building. Every state has different building codes.

How much insulation will I need to put between the floor joists of a room that I am building above a garage.?
Q. There will be 2 layers of plasterboard under the joists.
Asked by Phil C - Thu Jan 3 15:59:46 2008 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That depends on the depth of your joists. But 6" / 150mm is the minimum. As an alternative to mineral fibre, try Celotex cut to size or go organic with wool insulation. Celotex is a rigid foam insulation that is backed with aluminium foil on two sides to reflects heat back into the room. You can use it in the ceiling joists as well. Our attic used to be very chilly until I fitted the Celotex and now it keeps almost as warm as the rest of the house. Don't forget to put in some kind of door at the top or bottom of the stairway leading to the space above the garage or the heat will simply flow down the stairs and be lost. And why are you putting two layers of plasterboard under the joists? A single layer with taped seams and a good skim… [cont.]

Does installing insulation between the floor joists keep the upstairs rooms warmer?
Q. Also, does putting insulation where the house meets the foundation keep the house warmer?
Asked by davemac - Fri Nov 7 10:00:28 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Between the floor joists helps keep your Air Conditioned air from penetrating to the lower areas, plus it keeps the warm air from below rising up to the uper areas. It can help both ways. Insulation where the house meets the foundation works if the house is built on a concrete slab. It helps keep the cold or hot air from penetrating the foundation wall and affecting the concrete floor. If you have a crawl space or unfinished basement, the same rules apply. Insulation costs can be one of the quickest costs to recover through the years as energy costs rise.

A. You pretty much can't get boards that long. What you will have to do is run a beam down the center of the span, and then use 16foot joists. Typically, builders will use what is called an LVL beam to span long distances. LVL stands for laminated veneer lumber. It is esentially a piece of plywood in the shape of dimensional lumber (like a 2x12). Typically, LVLs won't span any farther than 20 feet, so you will need to double or even triple them (based on the length of the span)and then overlap the joints at least 4 feet. You will probably need to special order the LVLs first, and then if you are using normal lumber for your joists, buy them from a lumber yard. There are also specialty engineered floor joists instead of 2x12s, although… [cont.]

alternatives to timber floor joists?
Q. i am needing to find a solution to using timber floor joists in the construction of the first floor of a house I am building. I have been told of something nicknamed pozijoists and need to know where to source them

A. Try looking at TGI joists, they are made up of reconstructed wood and similar to chipboard, They range in size depending on the area they span, usually about 175mm tall and 12mm wide the top and bottom is 50mm X 40mm batten for strength and to allow you to fix flooring on top and ceiling underneath. The main advantages of tgi is where a 228mm X 75mm wooden joist would be used you can drop to a 175mm gaining head height, they also weigh about quarter of the weight of timber and less floor bounce. They have preformed Knockout holes for electrical and plumbing so easier for first fix mechanical. I tend to use these on all my projects far better than timber in my view.

Q. my house was built during the depression, all of my floor joists are 2x6's. they all need replaced too. can i notch the ends of 2x12's and use a joist hanger or is that completely against code?
Asked by ccornewell - Wed Jun 3 18:53:09 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you take 2" of the depth of a joist, you'd have to beef it up in width from 2x6 you'd have to go 4x4 and trim it out. using a hanger won't change the fact you have weaken the joist, but I'd use double hangers or a pitching plate (if you could) with other measures. I'd get as many 6x2 that you intend to cut at a measurement of at least 24"and knotch them like you want to knotch the joist and I then would bolt them to the joist (4 bolts each joist) you're cutting and trim the knotch section with trimmers (noggins) This maybe the only way you'd be able to get this passed as legal, we did a first floor extension once, where we couldn't put 8x2 because it would not have married in with the rest of the house, so we put to council using 6x4… [cont.]

Does hardwood flooring really have to be installed perpendicular to the joists under the sub floor?
Q. I am installing hardwood on the lower level of my splitlevel home. Have removed a halfwall between kitchen and diningroom. They also recomend laying the flooring parallel to length of room which would put my boards parallel to joists underneath. Any tips or ideas would help.

A. Assuming you're putting it in an unfinished basement room, the easiest way is to double up on one of your floor joists, and screw them together every couple of feet, alternating sides. One of the better ways to hang things like punching bags are to put a spacer on either side of the joist (assuming I-joists (newer homes), and then use strap iron bolted at the top, bottom and center of the joist, with a fourth bolt slightly lower than the joist, and a shackle to attach to the chain of the thing to be hung. If you have laminated joists or 2x8's, I wouldn't worry too much about re-enforcement. One of the most important things is load distribution. If you're using an I bolt screwed directly into the joist, use one that will thread almost… [cont.]

A. Home Depot, Lowe's, etc . . . Floor joists are such as they support the floor. If these wood elements were supporting the ceiling they would be called ceiling joists. If supporting the roof they would be called rafters. Supporting the walls >> joists. However, floor joists differ somewhat as they are usually of larger dimension as they must support you and I walking on them. Commonly they are 2 x 8's or 2 x 10's

Is it posible to lay floor boards in the same direction as the joists?
Q. I have read on the net that I should cover the joists with sheets of 20mm ply and then place the boards on that. I was thinking of cutting and screwing noggings between the joists at say 1M intervals and then placing the boards on that. Then my floor would be the same level as it is now. Has anyone any advice?

A. Obviously some of the people that answered this question don't know what noggings are. Anyway, your plan is very acceptable. Use screws wherever you can and this will eliminate the creeking. That noise comes from nails. Good luck
